かねない

Might, Could be, Capable of, Possible

それは命いのちを落おとしかねない感染症かんせんしょうらしい。

Apparently that is an infectious disease that could lead to death.

Explanation

「かねない」 attaches to the verb stem. It looks negative but means 'may well happen', a warning about a bad result. It is for bad things only, never good ones; not 「合格しかねない」: 「そんな乱暴な運転をしていたら、大事故を起こしかねない」 (If you drive that recklessly, you could cause a serious accident), 「休養を取らないと、過労死しかねない」 (If you don't rest, you could die from overwork).

Mixed up with

「かねない」: the speaker's warning, 'if this goes on, a bad result is quite likely'.

「かもしれない」: neutral guess, good or bad.

「おそれがある」: objective risk notice in news and official texts: 「台風が接近するおそれがある」.
