もらう

To receive, To get, To obtain

私わたしはお祖母ばあさんからおはしとコップをもらった。

I received chopsticks and a glass from my grandmother.

Explanation

「もらう」 means 'to receive': the subject is the receiver, and where the thing comes from is marked with 「に」 or 「から」: 「私は友達にプレゼントをもらいました」 (I received a present from my friend). When the giver is an organisation such as a school or company, use 「から」.

Mixed up with

Telling the three giving-and-receiving verbs apart: look at the subject and the direction of the thing.

「AはBに物をあげる」: A is the giver; it goes out.

「Aは私に物をくれる」: A is the giver; it comes to me.

「私はAに物をもらう」: I am the subject and the receiver.

When receiving from an elder, 「もらいます」 becomes 「いただきます」.
