N5
くれる
To give (me), To be given
おばあちゃんはいつも私にお菓子をくれる。
My grandmother always gives me candy.
Explanation
「くれる」 means 'to give (to me)': someone gives something or a kindness to me, or to someone on my side (family, companions). Pattern: giver は/が + (私に) + thing をくれる: 「友達はプレゼントをくれました」 (My friend gave me a present). In speech 「私に」 is often dropped. The speaker stands on the receiving side, with a feeling of gratitude.
Mixed up with
Whenever the thing ends up with 'me' or my side, use 「くれる」, whoever the giver is.
The subject cannot be 「私」: never 「私は彼に本をくれました」.
When the giver is an elder, a teacher or a boss, do not use 「くれます」; use 「くださいます」: 「先生が辞書をくださいました」.
