あげる

「あげる」 means 'to give': I give to someone else, or a third person gives to another third person. Pattern: giver は／が + receiver に + thing をあげる: 「私は友達にプレゼントをあげました」 (I gave my friend a present). The direction is outward: from my side to others.

•The receiver cannot be 'me': when someone gives to me, use 「くれる」; never 「友達は私にプレゼントをあげました」.

•When giving to an elder, a boss or a client, do not say 「あげます」; say 「差し上げます」. For feeding animals or watering plants, 「やる」 is traditionally used.
