ようにする

To try to, To make sure to, To endeavor to

次つぎの試合しあいで勝かてるようにする。

I will try to be able to win the next tournament.

Explanation

「〜ようにする」 means 'try to' or 'make sure to'. To reach a goal, you consciously do something or consciously avoid it: 「明日は遅刻しないようにしてください」 (Please try not to be late tomorrow).

「〜ようにしている」 means it has become a habit you keep up: 「健康のために、毎日野菜を食べるようにしている」 (For my health, I make a point of eating vegetables every day).

Mixed up with

Versus 「ようになる」: 「ようにする」 is your own conscious effort; 「ようになる」 is a change that happens naturally over time: 「日本語が話せるようになった」 (I've come to be able to speak Japanese).

「毎日日本語を練習するようにしている」 is something you deliberately keep doing.

When advising others, 「〜ようにしてください」 is softer than 「〜てください」 and sounds like a reminder to take care.

  3. 妻つまにばれないようにしてくれ!

Try not to let my wife find out about it!
