N4
なくてもいい
Don't have to
ミカは悪くないから謝らなくてもいいよ。
Mika, you are not in the wrong, so you don't have to apologize.
Explanation
「〜なくてもいい」 means 'you don't have to …'. There is no need to do it, and nothing bad happens if you don't: 「明日は日曜日だから、早く起きなくてもいい」 (Tomorrow is Sunday, so I don't have to get up early), 「靴を脱がなくてもいいですよ」 (You don't need to take your shoes off). It is the usual answer to 「〜なければなりませんか」: 「いいえ、〜なくてもいいです」.
Mixed up with
Learn the set: must do = 「〜なければならない」; need not = 「〜なくてもいい」; may do = 「〜てもいい」; must not = 「〜てはいけない」.
To an elder or a client, a bare 「〜なくてもいいです」 is a little casual. Use 「〜なくてもかまいません」 instead.
