Explanation

「以上に」 means 'more than...'. The first part is the standard you expected, and the real level goes well beyond it: 「想像以上に難しかった」 (It was far harder than I imagined), 「期待していた以上に素晴らしい成果が出た」 (The results were better than I had hoped), 「必要以上にお金を使ってしまう」 (I spend more money than I need to). Before a noun: 「以上の＋noun」.

Mixed up with

「より」: a neutral comparison: 「東京は大阪より大きい」.

「以上に」: implies 'I thought it would be like that, but it went beyond what I expected'.

「想像以上に」 is stronger than a plain 「想像より」.
