Explanation

Follows a noun and means 'taking ... as the turning point'. A major event triggers a clear change, and the result is usually a positive development or improvement. It is formal, common in news, editorials and company histories: 「大震災を契機に防災意識が高まった」 (After the great earthquake, awareness of disaster prevention grew). Even if the first event is a disaster, the result tends to be a change for the better.

Mixed up with

「をきっかけに」 is the most general and fits small everyday or personal events: 「アニメを見たのをきっかけに」.

「を契機に」 is bookish; the first event is usually something big for society, an industry or a life.

「を皮切りに」 means one event is the first stop and many similar ones follow: 「東京公演を皮切りに、全国ツアーが始まる」 (Starting with the Tokyo show, a nationwide tour begins).
