に越したことはない

にこしたことはない

There is nothing better than, It is the best, Would be the best

受験じゅけんは受うかる確率かくりつが高たかいに越こしたことはない。

When it comes to entrance exams, the higher your chance of passing, the better.

Explanation

「に越したことはない」 means 'there is nothing better than..., it's best to...'. It is not strictly required, but by common sense and experience, doing the first thing is the ideal and safest choice: 「安いに越したことはない」 (Cheaper is always better), 「準備は早いに越したことはない」 (The earlier you prepare, the better). It follows a verb (dictionary or ない form), an adjective or a noun.

Mixed up with

「ほうがいい」: a personal piece of advice in a specific situation, choosing between two; more direct.

「に越したことはない」: based on common sense and life experience, 'of course this is best': 「給料は高ければ高いに越したことはない」 (The higher the pay the better), 「薬は飲まないに越したことはない」 (It's best not to need medicine).
