としても
Even if (we assume), Assuming, Also as
たとえ仕事が簡単だとしても、仕事は丁寧にやるべきだ。
Even if work is easy, work should be done with care.
Explanation
「としても」 has 2 uses
1Even if
After the plain form (だとしても after nouns and な-adjectives): you assume a case and the conclusion stays the same: 「たとえ失敗したとしても、後悔しない」.
たとえできるとしても、やらないだろう。
I wouldn't do it even if I could.
たとえ早くついたとしても、一番乗りになることはないだろう。
Even if we get there early, we probably won't be the first ones there.
2As … too
Right after a noun it is として (as) + も: 「歌手としても有名だ」 (also famous as a singer); 「私としても困る」 (it troubles me too, for my part).
こんな急に内容を変えられたら、私としても困ります。
If you change the content this suddenly, it puts me in a difficult spot as well.
環境問題に取り組んでいる会社としてもこういうことをしたくないのですが、仕方がないんです。
As a company that works on environmental issues, we don't want to do this, but we really don't have a choice.
Mixed up with
「としても」: a pure hypothesis, often with 「たとえ、仮に」: 'even supposing it were true'.
「にしても」: granting a fact that already exists. 「忙しいにしても、連絡ぐらいはできるだろう」 (Even if you're busy, you can surely make a call).
「ても」: the basic concession, for hypotheses and facts alike, and the most neutral.
