As a senpai, he is a good person, but I don't think I would want to be friends with him.
Explanation
「としては」 has 2 uses
1Speaking as
Puts someone's role or standpoint up front, then gives that view: 「私個人としては賛成だ」 (personally, I'm for it).
To me her figure is perfect, but she herself apparently isn't happy with it.
Everyone is saying 'Amazing!' for finishing the marathon, but as for my uncle, it seems that he's not satisfied with the time.
2For a…

For an outline, it still needs work.
As a senpai, he is a good person, but I don't think I would want to be friends with him.
Mixed up with
「として」 just states a role: 「留学生として来日した」 (I came to Japan as an exchange student).
「としては」 carries contrast: from other positions it might differ, but from this position ...: 「親としては反対せざるを得ない」 (As a parent, I have no choice but to object).
「冬としては/にしては暖かい」: often interchangeable, but 「にしては」 has a stronger sense of contrast, while 「としては」 is milder and more like an objective judgment.
