Explanation

「Vるかたわら／Nのかたわら」 means 'besides doing X, also keeps doing Y'. The first is your main job or studies; the second is something you keep up in spare time, like writing novels, volunteering or acting. 「会社勤めのかたわら、小説を書いている」 (Besides working at a company, I write novels). Both must be long-term activities, not short simultaneous acts; you cannot say 「ご飯を食べるかたわら、テレビを見る」. Written style, common in profiles of people.

Mixed up with

「ながら」 is one person doing two concrete things at the same time: 「テレビを見ながらご飯を食べる」.

「がてら」 is doing a second thing in passing while out for the main purpose: 「散歩がてら、パンを買ってくる」.

「かたわら」 is about balancing long-term roles, with a clear main and side, at the level of life or career.
