N5
まえに
Before, In front of
病院の前にあるコンビニ。
A convenience store in front of the hospital.
Explanation
「まえに」 has 2 uses
1Before (time)
After a dictionary-form verb or noun + の: before doing something: 「寝る前に、歯を磨く」 (I brush my teeth before bed).
食べるまえに「いただきます」と言う。
Before eating we say 'いただきます'.
家に入る前に靴を脱ぐ。
I take off my shoes before I enter the house.
2In front of
After noun + の: in front of a place: 「駅の前に」 (in front of the station).
病院の前にあるコンビニ。
A convenience store in front of the hospital.
テレビのまえに、机があります。
There is a desk in front of the TV.
Mixed up with
The verb before it is always the dictionary form, whatever the tense of the whole sentence: 「寝る前に歯を磨いた」 (I brushed my teeth before sleeping). Never 「寝た前に」: when you brushed your teeth, sleeping had not happened yet. The same goes for 「日本へ来る前に、中国で日本語を勉強した」.
A noun needs 「の」: 「食事の前に」; leaving it out is wrong.
