N5
だった・でした
Was, Were (Past tense)
あの電車は静かだった。
That train was quiet.
Explanation
The past of nouns and な-adjectives: 「だった」 in casual speech, 「でした」 when polite: 「学生だった」, 「学生でした」, 「静かだった」, 「静かでした」. It attaches directly to the noun or the な-adjective stem.
Mixed up with
An い-adjective has no 「〜でした」: not 「昨日は寒いでした」, but 「昨日は寒かったです」.
「綺麗」 is a な-adjective, so its past is 「綺麗だった / 綺麗でした」, never 「綺麗かった」.
