N5
じゃない
Is not, Isn't
これは食べ物じゃない。
This isn't food.
Explanation
The casual negative of nouns and な-adjectives: 「学生じゃない」, 「静かじゃない」. 「じゃない」 is the spoken contraction of 「ではない」; in writing and formal situations use 「ではない」. With rising intonation, 「〜じゃない?」 means 'isn't it …?' and is used to check or ask for agreement. Polite forms: 「ではありません」, 「じゃありません」, 「じゃないです」.
Mixed up with
「じゃない」 attaches only to nouns and な-adjectives. An い-adjective needs 「〜くない」: never 「暑いじゃない」.
Falling tone is a plain negative: 「学生じゃない。」 (not a student). Rising tone is a check: 「いい天気じゃない?」 (Isn't it nice weather?)
