N5
じゃなかった
Was not, Wasn't
りんごじゃなかった。
It was not an apple.
Explanation
The casual past negative of nouns and な-adjectives: 「学生じゃなかった」, 「静かじゃなかった」. In writing it is 「ではなかった」. Polite forms: 「ではありませんでした」, 「じゃありませんでした」, 「じゃなかったです」. It says that in the past someone was not something, or did not have a certain quality.
Mixed up with
The four forms of nouns and な-adjectives (you should know them by reflex at N5):
present affirmative: だ / です
present negative: じゃない / ではありません
past affirmative: だった / でした
past negative: じゃなかった / ではありませんでした
Do not mix this up with the い-adjective 「くなかった」: 「静かじゃなかった」 is right, 「静かくなかった」 is wrong.
