すぎる

Too much, Very

ここはゴミが多おおすぎる。

There is too much garbage here.

Explanation

「〜すぎる」 means 'too …' or 'overdo', attached to the ます-stem of a verb, the stem of an い-adjective (without 「い」) or a な-adjective: 「飲みすぎる」 (drink too much), 「高すぎる」 (too expensive), 「静かすぎる」 (too quiet). It mostly carries a negative feeling: 「食べすぎてお腹が痛い」 (I ate too much and my stomach hurts). In speech it can also be an exaggerated compliment: 「可愛すぎる」 (so cute it's too much).

Mixed up with

「いい」 becomes 「よすぎる」; 「ない」 becomes 「なさすぎる」: 「自信がなさすぎる」 (has far too little confidence).

Drop 「い」 from an い-adjective: 「高すぎる」, not 「高いすぎる」; a な-adjective takes no 「な」: not 「親切なすぎる」.

Because it is mostly negative, do not praise an elder with 「立派すぎます」; say 「大変立派です」.

Examples

  1. あの人ひとは私わたしのタイプじゃなさすぎる。

That person is so not my type.

  2. 私わたしはお金かねがなさすぎる。

I have way too little money.

  3. 頑張がんばりすぎるのは身体からだに良よくない。

Working too hard is not good for your health.
