N4

たとえば

For example

たとえば、ドイツとかは?

For example, how about Germany, or something?

Explanation

「たとえば」 means 'for example'. After a general point or conclusion, it introduces a concrete case so that it is easier to understand: 「たとえば、日本料理なら寿司などがある」 (For example, Japanese food includes sushi and the like).

Mixed up with

It often pairs with 「〜など」 or 「〜のような」. When you see 「たとえば」 at the start of a sentence, look for 「〜など」 or 「〜のような」 after it.

Today it is usually written in kana, sometimes as 「例えば」.

Examples

  2. たとえば、翻訳者ほんやくしゃになったら日本にほんに住すむことが出来できる。

For example, if you become a translator, you will be able to live in Japan.

  3. たとえば、「英語えいごが好すきですか。」と聞きいてみたら?

For example, why don't you ask 'Do you like English?'
