N4
れる・られる(可能)
れる・られる(かのう)
To be able, Can (Potential)
明日までに届けられる?
Can you deliver it by tomorrow?
Explanation
The potential form means 'can do', either because you have the ability or because the situation or rules allow it: 「日本語が話せる」 (I can speak Japanese). In the potential, the object's 「を」 usually becomes 「が」: 「日本語を話す」→「日本語が話せる」.
Forming it: for う-verbs change the last kana to the え-row: 書く→書ける, 話す→話せる, 飲む→飲める; for る-verbs drop 「る」 and add 「られる」: 食べる→食べられる; する→できる, くる→こられる.
Mixed up with
In speech people say 「食べれる」 and 「見れる」 (「ら抜き言葉」). Exams still treat them as non-standard, so stick to 「〜られる」.
The potential of 「する」 is 「できる」, there is no 「×すれる」. The potential of 「くる」 is 「こられる」, read 「こ」, not 「き」.
「見える」 and 「聞こえる」 are what you see or hear without trying; 「見られる」 and 「聞ける」 mean you are able to, or have the chance to, see or hear.
