たがる

To want to (Third person)

ジョンはなんでいつも悪口わるぐちを言いいたがるんだろう。

I wonder why John always wants to talk badly about people.

Explanation

「たがる」 is the third-person version of 「たい」: it says that someone else wants to do something.

We cannot say outright what is in another person's mind, so it describes how they seem: 「子供は水を飲みたがっている」 (The child wants a drink of water).

「~たがっている」 is the usual form; 「~たがる」 describes a habit or personality.

Mixed up with

The particle changes. 「~たい」 takes 「を」 or 「が」: 「水が飲みたい/水を飲みたい」. 「~たがる」 takes only 「を」: 「子供は水を飲みたがっている」, not 「×子供は水が飲みたがっている」.

It is for other people, not yourself. Not 「×私は日本へ行きたがる」; say 「行きたい」.

  2. 娘むすめはいつもスポーツをしたがる。

My daughter always wants to play sports.

  3. 彼かれは動物園どうぶつえんに行いきたがる。

He wants to go to the zoo.
