かもしれない

Might, Maybe, Probably

来年らいねんから観光客かんこうきゃくが増ふえるかもしれない。

From next year, the number of tourists might increase.

Explanation

「かもしれない」 means 'might': it is possible, but not certain, and you are not very sure.

「明日は雨が降るかもしれない」 (It might rain tomorrow). It often goes with 「もしかしたら」 (perhaps). In speech it shortens to 「かも」.

Nouns and na-adjectives join directly, without 「だ」: 「彼は学生かもしれない」.

Mixed up with

From most to least sure: 「~に違いない」 (must be) about 90% or more; 「~だろう/でしょう」 (probably) about 70 to 80%; 「~かもしれない」 (might) about 30 to 50%.

In daily talk, 「~かもしれません」 is also a polite way to disagree or give a warning without sounding too absolute.

Examples

  1. あの建物たてものは教会きょうかいかもしれない。

That building might be a church.

  2. 今日きょうは無理むりかもしれない。

It might not be possible today.

  3. そうかもね。

    That might be right.
