そういう

Like that, Kind of

こういう映画えいがは初はじめて見みる。

It's my first time seeing a movie like this.

Explanation

「こういう・そういう・ああいう・どういう」 go before a noun and mean 'this kind of / that kind of / what kind of'.

In conversation, 「そういう」 often picks up what the other person just said: 「そういう考えは素晴らしいですね」 (That's a wonderful way of thinking).

Mixed up with

「そういう」 refers back to what the other person just said. It is the most common.

「ああいう」 refers to a kind of person or thing you both know but that is not in front of you: 「ああいう人にはなりたくない」 (I don't want to become that kind of person).

「そういうこと」 means 'I see, that's how it is' or 'that's right'.

Examples

  1. そういう人ひとは嫌きらい。

  2. そういうところに行いきたい。

  3. そういう人ひともいるよ。

There are people like that too, you know.
