がる

To feel, To think, To act as if, To want, To desire

犬いぬが嫌いやがることをしてはいけない。

You must not do anything that the dog would not like.

Explanation

「がる」 after an adjective stem says that someone else shows a certain feeling.

We cannot see inside other people, so you cannot say 「×彼は寂しい」 or 「×妹は犬が怖い」. Say 「彼は寂しがっている」 and 「妹は犬を怖がっている」.

The usual form is 「~がっている」.

Mixed up with

The particle changes. For your own feeling use 「が」: 「私は犬が怖い」, 「私は人形がほしい」. With 「~がる」 use 「を」: 「妹は犬を怖がっている」, 「子供はおもちゃをほしがっている」. Often tested.

「~がる」 is for other people, not for yourself. Not 「×私は寒がっている」 but 「私は寒い」.
