がする

To give off, Smell, Sound, Taste, Sensation

この石鹸せっけんはバラの匂においがするから好すきです。

I like this soap because it smells of roses.

Explanation

'noun + がする' means you pick something up with your senses without trying: it just reaches you.

Common words: 「音がする」 (there's a sound), 「声がする」 (there's a voice), 「においがする」 (there's a smell), 「味がする」 (it tastes of …), 「気がする」 (I have a feeling).

「隣の部屋から声がする」 (I can hear voices from the next room).

Mixed up with

「~がする」 is something that reaches you; 「聞く」, 「嗅ぐ」, 「味わう」 are things you do on purpose: 「熱心に話を聞く」.

「音を立てる」 is making a noise yourself: 「音を立てないで食べなさい」. 「音がする」 is a noise that is simply there: 「外で風の音がする」.

「気がする」 means 'I have a feeling that …'. It is more modest than stating it outright, so use it for hunches and careful opinions.

  2. このバナナは変へんな味あじがする。
