How to tell them apart

「おかげで」 is normally followed by a good result; 「せいで」 by a bad one, with blame: 「寝坊したせいで遅刻した」.

Exam questions hinge on the result: 「助かった」, 「合格した」, 「直った」 take 「おかげで」; 「遅刻した」, 「失敗した」 take 「せいで」.

Occasionally it is used sarcastically, like 'thanks a lot, now I'm in trouble'.
