せいで

Because of, Due to, Blame

昨日きのう夜よる遅おそくまで起おきていたせいで寝坊ねぼうした。

Because I stayed up late last night, I overslept today.

Explanation

「〜せいで」 (所為で) means 'because of ...' in the sense of 'it's ...'s fault'. A bad result is blamed on a person, thing or situation, with complaint: 「彼が遅れたせいで、電車に乗り遅れた」 (Because he was late, I missed the train). Also 「〜のせいだ」 and 「〜のせいにする」 (put the blame on ...).

Mixed up with

「〜おかげで」 (thanks to ...): a good result, with gratitude; 「〜せいで」: a bad result, with blame. (Sarcastic uses exist, e.g. 「君のおかげで散々な目に遭った」.)

Forms: nouns need 「の」 (彼のせいで); na-adjectives need 「な」 (不真面目なせいで).
