Explanation
「そのため(に)」 has 2 uses
1Because of that (cause → result)
The first sentence is a cause and the next is the result that followed: 「台風が接近した。 「に」 can be dropped.
Japan's birth rate keeps falling. Because of that, you get money from the government when a child is born.
Hamada-san loves fishing. For that reason, he does it every morning before he goes to work.
2To that end (purpose)
The first sentence states a goal, and 「そのために」 introduces what you do to reach it: 「医者になりたい。 (I want to be a doctor. To that end I study every day). Here 「に」 is usually kept.

I'm a railway fan. I take pictures of all kinds of trains, and for that I sometimes stay up all night.
Mixed up with
In the cause → result use, it isn't followed by your own order, request or invitation. Don't say 「×
「だから」 is subjective, the most common in daily speech, and can be followed by a judgment, order or intention.
「したがって」 is the most rigorous, academic or legal: 'from the above, it follows that'.
If the previous sentence states a goal, 「そのために」 can also mean 'for that purpose'.
