Explanation

Attached to the verb stem, it means 'finish making' with a feeling of a finished product. 「〜上がる」 is intransitive, the thing gets completed by itself: 「ケーキが焼き上がった」 (The cake is baked). 「〜上げる」 is transitive, someone completes it: 「論文を書き上げた」 (I finished writing the paper).

Mixed up with

「〜終わる」 only says the action ended in time, however well it went; 「〜上がる／上げる」 stresses that a finished product came out, and to a satisfying standard.

Common verbs: 炊き上がる, 焼き上がる, 出来上がる, 仕上がる, 書き上げる, 編み上げる.
