N3
べきではない
Should not, Ought not to
濡れている手でコンセントに触れるべきではない。
You shouldn't touch an outlet with wet hands.
Explanation
「~べきではない」 means 'should not', for things that are wrong by morals or common sense: 「そんな無責任なことを言うべきではない」 (You shouldn't say such irresponsible things), 「感情的になって判断するべきではない」 (You shouldn't decide on emotion). The tone is serious, used for criticism or self-reflection. 「する」 becomes 「するべきではない」 or 「すべきではない」.
Mixed up with
「~てはいけない」 is a hard ban, like a rule or a parent's order: 「ここでタバコを吸ってはいけない」 (No smoking here).
「~べきではない」 says it is wrong in principle.
「~ないほうがいい」 is only a gentle 'better not'.
Speech allows 「べきじゃない」; in formal writing and exams, 「べきではない」 is the usual form.
