ば〜ほど

The more…the more

職人しょくにんであればあるほど凄すごいものが作つくれる。

The more of a true craftsman someone is, the more amazing the things they can make.

Explanation

「~ば~ほど」 means 'the more... the more...'. The same word is usually used in both parts, and as the first grows, so does the second: 「考えれば考えるほど分からない」 (The more I think, the less I understand), 「安ければ安いほどいい」 (The cheaper the better), 「簡単なら簡単なほどいい」 (The simpler the better). In speech the first 「ば」 part is often dropped: 「考えるほど混乱する」. Nouns use 「であればあるほど」.

Mixed up with

For 「する」 say 「すればするほど」; don't leave out the dictionary form in the middle.

The negative is 「~なければ~ないほど」: 「使わなければ使わないほど錆びる」 (The less you use it, the more it rusts).

The ending often has 「~ほうがいい」, 「~になる」, 「~てくる」 and similar.

Examples

  1. 公園こうえんは広ひろければ広ひろいほどいい。

The bigger the park is, the better it is.

  2. 身体からだを鍛きたえるほど、身体からだが強つよくなる。

The more you work out, the stronger your body gets.

  3. この豆まめを食たべれば食たべるほど痩やせるらしい。

I hear that the more of these beans you eat, the thinner you will become.
