N3
ほど
The more, About, To the extent that, So much… that
I practiced myself to death, but I was not able to participate in the match.
Explanation
「ほど」 has 4 uses
1About (a number)
After a number, 'about', more formal than 「ぐらい」: 「十分ほど待ってください」.
Sorry I'm late. I'll be there in about 10 minutes.
I will be there in about 10 minutes.
2So much that
Uses a strong example to show how far something goes: 「涙が出るほど嬉しかった」 (so happy I almost cried).
I practiced myself to death, but I was not able to participate in the match.
I understand how you feel to the point that it hurts, but that doesn't mean that you can say stuff like that.
3The more…, the more
As the first thing grows, the second grows too: 「山は高くなるほど寒くなる」 (the higher you go, the colder it gets).
The better things are going, the more carefully you should act.
The more you study Japanese, the more interesting it gets.
4Not as … as
With a negative: 'not as … as': 「去年ほど暑くない」 (not as hot as last year).
This summer is hot too, but not as hot as last year.
I've never met anyone who works as hard as he does.
Mixed up with
For 'about' and for extreme degree, 「ほど」 and 「くらい」 are often interchangeable; 「ほど」 is more written and formal.
The 'at least this much, a small thing' use takes only 「くらい」, never 「ほど」: 「名前くらい書ける」 (I can at least write my name).
はない」 is a superlative: 'nothing is more... than...'.
