どんなに〜ても

No matter how

どんなにお金持かねもちでも、働はたらかないとお金かねが無なくなっていく。

No matter how rich you are, if you don't work, money will just continue to disappear.

Explanation

「どんなに~ても」 means 'no matter how...'. However extreme the first part is, the state, resolve or result in the second part does not change: 「どんなに辛くても、最後まで諦めない」 (No matter how hard it is, I won't give up until the end). The focus is on how deep the first part goes, and it often shows firm resolve.

Mixed up with

「どんなに」 stresses degree (how sad, how hard). It takes adjectives and verbs alike; with a verb it means 'however hard you do it': 「どんなに頑張っても」.

「いくら」 is about amount, money, number of times and repeated effort (how many times I practice, how much it costs).

When you see 「どんなに」 at the start, look ahead for 「~ても・~でも」. Ordering questions test this.

Examples

No matter how much they laugh at us, let's keep pushing forward.

  2. どんなに綺麗きれいでも何百なんびゃく万円まんえんもかかる絵えは買かいません。

No matter how beautiful it is, I won't buy a painting that costs millions of yen.

  3. どんなに頑張がんばっても無理むりだと思おもう。

I think that it is impossible no matter how hard I try.
