Formal or literary だ, Authoritative, Copula

ここから悲かなしいことが起おきるのである。

From here on, something sad happens.

Explanation

「である」 is the formal, written version of 「だ」, used in papers, news, legal texts and serious writing: 「教育は国家の基盤である」 (Education is the foundation of a nation). It also works before a noun: 「政治家である彼」 (he, who is a politician). Keep one style through a whole text; don't mix 「である」 with 「だ」 or 「です・ます」.

Mixed up with

「だ」 is plain everyday speech and too casual for a paper; 「である」 is the standard for written argument; 「です」 is polite speech and ordinary letters.

Forms: negative 「ではない」, guess 「であろう」, past 「であった」, connecting 「であり」.
