N3
さて
Well, Well then
さて、そろそろ出ますか。
Well then, shall we get going soon?
Explanation
「さて」 goes at the start of a sentence and means 'well then'. It closes the previous topic or small talk and moves to the main subject or the next step. It is common in meetings, talks, speeches and letters: 「さて、本題に入りましょう」 (Well then, let's get to the main point). In daily life it also marks the start of an action: 「さて、そろそろ出かけようか」 (Well, shall we head out?).
Mixed up with
「さて」 moves forward to the main point, leading from small talk to the real topic. 「ところで」 starts a different topic unrelated to what came before ('by the way').
「さてと」 and 「さてさて」 are said to yourself: 'right, time to get going'.
In a reading passage, 「さて」 usually means the author's main argument is about to begin.
