させてもらう

To have the honor of doing, To take the liberty of doing, To do (polite, formal)

今日きょうは体調たいちょうが悪わるいので、先さきに帰かえらせてもらいます。

I'm not feeling well today, so I'll go home early, if that's all right.

Explanation

「~(さ)せてもらう」 means 'let me do...'. The person acting is the speaker: you do it with the other person's permission, and you are grateful for it. 「今日は早く帰らせてもらいます」 (I'll leave early today, if you don't mind). The more polite form is 「~(さ)せていただく」: 「自己紹介させていただきます」 (Allow me to introduce myself). It is humbler than a plain 「~します」.

Mixed up with

The one acting is 'I', not the other person.

「教えてください」 is 'please teach me'; 「教えさせてください」 is 'please let me teach you'.

If you don't actually need permission and it causes no trouble, 「昨日テレビを見させていただきました」 sounds like over-polite speech. When asking permission, it is perfectly standard.
