ことなの
(A) is (Description of A), (A) means that (Description of A)
ハダウェイ:「恋愛とはどういうことなのだろうか。」
Haddaway: 'Love, what does it mean?'
Explanation
「~ことなの?」 asks what something really means. It often goes with 「というのは」 or 「ということは」 before it: 「人生を楽しむというのは、どういうことなのだろう」 (What does it really mean to enjoy life?), 「合格したっていうことは、もう勉強しなくていいってことなの?」 (Does passing mean I don't have to study anymore?). In casual speech the sentence just ends with a rising 「~ことなの?」; more formally, 「~ことなのですか」. As a statement, 「AというのはBことなのだ」 defines A or draws a conclusion: 「漫画家というのは漫画を描く人のことなのだ」 (A manga artist is someone who draws manga).
Mixed up with
「どういうことなの?」 means 'what on earth is going on?', with disbelief and a demand for an explanation.
「~の?」 only asks about the fact: 「行くの?」 (Are you going?). 「~ことなの?」 asks what lies behind it.
