N3

あまり

So much...that

彼かれは仕事しごとを終おわらせることに集中しゅうちゅうするあまり、終電しゅうでんを逃のがしました。

He was so concentrated on finishing his work that he missed the last train.

Explanation

「~あまり」 means 'so much... that...'. The first part is a strong feeling or state, such as 「驚き」, 「悲しみ」, 「緊張」, 「心配」, beyond what you can control; the result is usually bad: 「驚きのあまり、声が出なかった」 (I was so shocked I couldn't speak), 「緊張するあまり、倒れてしまった」 (He was so nervous that he collapsed).

Mixed up with

Don't mix it up with the N4 「あまり~ない」 ('not very'). Here the sentence is positive and means 'so... that'.

The result is normally not a good one, and not your own will or an order. Don't say 「×嬉しいあまり、プレゼントを買おう」.

Adjectives often turn into the 「さ」 noun first: 「うれしさのあまり」, 「悔しさのあまり」.
