How to tell them apart

「だけあって」 is only for praise, 'as expected of...'; never for disappointment.

「だけに」 works both ways, including 'because I expected so much, the letdown is bigger': 「楽しみにしていただけに、中止になって残念だ」.

If the sentence ends with disappointment, regret or sadness, choose 「だけに」, not 「だけあって」.
