だけに

As might be expected, Because, All the more because, It's only natural

このアパートは東京とうきょう駅えきに近ちかいだけに、家賃やちんが高たかい。

This apartment is very close to Tokyo station, and as one might expect, the rent is expensive.

Explanation

「だけに」 means 'precisely because..., all the more'. The first part is a special reason, so the result or feeling is stronger than usual. It works for good and bad: 「苦労しただけに、喜びも大きい」 (Because he went through hardship, the joy is greater); 「期待していただけに、がっかりした」 (I had high hopes, so I was all the more disappointed). What follows is usually a feeling or a natural result, not a command or invitation.

Mixed up with

「だけあって」 is only for praise, 'as expected of...'; never for disappointment.

「だけに」 works both ways, including 'because I expected so much, the letdown is bigger': 「楽しみにしていただけに、中止になって残念だ」.

If the sentence ends with disappointment, regret or sadness, choose 「だけに」, not 「だけあって」.
