Explanation

「際」 is a formal word for 'time', so 「際に」 works like 「ときに」 in polite writing. You see it on notices, instruction sheets, business e-mails and contracts: 「お帰りの際」「ご利用の際」「お申し込みの際」. It can follow the plain present form (when doing something) or the past form 「～た際に」 (the time I did it). After a noun, add 「の」.

In daily talk people say 「とき」. When serving customers or writing official text, 「お帰りのとき」 sounds too casual; use 「お帰りの際」.
