てまえ
Just before, this side of; out of face (in front of others)

Explanation
「手前」 has 2 uses
1Just before / this side of
「Nの手前」「V-る手前」: the point just before a place or state, or the side nearer to you: 「改札の手前で」 (just before the ticket gate), 「死ぬ一歩手前」 (one step from death), 「手前の看板」 (the sign on this side).
あなたの手前にあるものを見てください。
Please look at the thing that is in front of you.
崖から落ちる手前で父親に腕を引っ張られた。
My father pulled me by my arm before I fell off the cliff.
2Out of face (in front of others)
「V-た/V-ている手前」「Nの手前」: because of what you said or your position in front of others, you cannot back down without losing face: 「優勝すると宣言した手前、弱音は吐けない」 (Having declared I'd win, I can't show weakness), 「生徒の手前、間違えるわけにはいかない」 (In front of my students, I can't make a mistake). The second part is usually 〜わけにはいかない or 〜できない.
勢いで手を上げてしまった手前、答えずに手を下げるわけにはいかない。
Having put my hand up on impulse, I can't just lower it without answering.
先輩にはいつもお世話になっている手前、彼女の頼みを断るわけにはいかない。
Since my senpai always takes good care of me, there is no way that I can turn down her request.
