Explanation

「に気をつける」 means 'be careful about, watch out for'. You focus your attention on a danger, your health or an easy mistake so nothing goes wrong. It takes 「に」: 「風邪を引かないように体に気をつけてください」 (Take care of yourself so you don't catch a cold), 「暗いから足元に気をつけて」 (It's dark, watch your step), 「怪しいメールに気をつける」 (be wary of suspicious e-mails). With a verb, use the ない form: 「〜ないように気をつける」.

Mixed up with

「気をつける」: deliberately be careful.

「気づく」: notice something you had not noticed: 「間違いに気づく」 (notice a mistake).

「気にする」: be bothered by something.
