ざるを得ない

ざるをえない

Can't help doing, Have no choice but

山やまの頂上ちょうじょうまで登のぼりたかったが、天候てんこうが悪わるくなって来きたから諦あきらめざるを得えない。

I wanted to hike to the peak of the mountain, but the weather was getting worse so we had no choice but to give up.

Explanation

「ざるを得ない」 means 'I don't want to, but the situation leaves me no choice'. It carries a feeling of reluctance. Take the verb's ない form and drop 「ない」: 「行かざるを得ない」 (have to go), 「認めざるを得ない」 (have to admit it). 「する」 becomes 「せざるを得ない」, never 「しざるを得ない」. It is fairly formal.

Mixed up with

「ないわけにはいかない」: you can't skip it because of duty or common sense.

「しかない」: there is no other way; common in speech.

「ざるを得ない」: unwilling, but forced by circumstances; heavy and written in tone.
