Then again, Just when I thought, No sooner than
Just when I thought the baby had stopped crying, he started to cry loudly again.
Explanation
「かと思ったら・かと思うと」 has 3 uses
1No sooner … than
You see A, and almost at once something surprising or opposite follows: 「泣いたかと思ったら、もう笑っている」. Both parts are things you observe, not your own will.
Just when I thought the baby had stopped crying, he started to cry loudly again.
No sooner had my kid fallen down than she got up and started running.
2I thought …, but actually
You state what you expected, and what follows is the different reality: 「冷たい人かと思ったら、ただ人見知りなだけだった」 (I thought he was cold, but he's just shy).
After making mistake after mistake I thought they'd be fed up with me, but they weren't.
I wondered what he was going to say, and then he started bad-mouthing me in front of everyone.
3When I think that …
A is what you think of and B is the feeling it brings: 「最後かと思うと、悲しくなる」 (When I think it's the last time, I feel sad).
When I think that today's game is the last one, I get sad.
When I think that I'm leaving this town next month, I feel terribly lonely.
