いつの間にか

いつのまにか

Suddenly, Unnoticed, Without noticing, Too soon

気きづいたら、いつの間まにか冬ふゆになっていた。

Before I knew it, it was winter.

Explanation

Means 'before I knew it'. The change did not happen suddenly; it was completed quietly while nobody was paying attention: 「いつの間にか暗くなっていた」 (It had gotten dark before I knew it). The verb usually shows a result of change, like 「~になっている」 or 「~ていた」: it got dark, the child grew up, I fell asleep.

Mixed up with

「いつか」: some day in the future, or an unspecified time in the past. 「いつか日本へ行きたい」 (I want to go to Japan some day).

「そのうち」: points to the future, 'one of these days'. 「そのうち治るよ」 (It'll get better soon).

「いつの間にか」: looks back: it had already happened without being noticed.

Examples

  1. いつの間まにかもう1年ねんが経たってしまった。

Before I knew it, another year had gone by.

  2. オレはみんなからいつの間まにかポチと呼よばれるようになった。

Without noticing they have come to call me 'Pochi.'

  3. 3年間ねんかん日本人にほんじんの友達ともだちと毎日まいにち日本語にほんごで話はなしていたら、いつの間まにか日本語にほんごが上手じょうずになっていた。

After three years of speaking Japanese every day with my Japanese friend, I became fluent in Japanese without noticing.
