極まりない・極まる

きわまりない・きわまる

Extreme, Extremely

この展望台てんぼうだいから見みる景色けしきは美うつくしいこと極きわまりない。

The view from the observatory is extremely beautiful.

Explanation

「極まる/極まりない」 means something has reached its extreme: 'utterly ~'. It is mostly for strong negative feelings such as criticism or disgust: 「失礼極まりない」 (extremely rude), 「不愉快極まる」 (extremely unpleasant). A positive use is the set phrase 「感極まる」 (to be overcome with emotion).

Building: 「極まる」 takes only the stem of a na-adjective. 「極まりない」 takes a na-adjective stem (「危険極まりない」), a na-adjective + なこと (「不便なこと極まりない」), or an i-adjective + こと (「美しいこと極まりない」). Stiff written style.

Mixed up with

「極まる」 cannot follow an i-adjective: not 「危ない極まる」.

With an i-adjective, 「極まりない」 needs 「こと」: 「口惜しいこと極まりない」.

「の極み」 follows a noun: 「贅沢の極み」, 「痛恨の極み」, 「感激の極み」.

「極まりない」 usually judges the nature of something (rude, dangerous); 「の極み」 is more about a personal feeling at its peak.
