にして①

At, Over, In, Only (after, when, or because)

At the age of 30, I traveled abroad for the first time.

Explanation

「にして①」 has 2 uses

1At (an age or stage): only then / already

After an age, a count, a stage, or a person of a high level: 「30歳にして初めて」 (only at thirty, for the first time), 「五回目にしてやっと」 (only on the fifth try), 「文豪にして初めて書ける」 (only a great writer could write it). The set phrase 「今にして思えば」 (looking back now) belongs here.

At the age of 30, I traveled abroad for the first time.

I was finally able to get my qualification only after my fifth try.

2In just (an instant / one night)

After 「一瞬」 or 「一夜」, it stresses how short the time was: 「一夜にして破産した」 (went bankrupt overnight), 「一瞬にして消えた」 (vanished in an instant).

Due to the bubble bursting, he went bankrupt overnight.

The perpetrators turned off the road and disappeared into the darkness in an instant.

Mixed up with

「になって」 is plain speech: 「60歳になって始めた」.

「にして」 is refined and stresses a long life, or marvels at starting late or achieving early.

「にして」 has another use meaning 'both X and Y', which is a different pattern.
