Thought...but, When...thought that...but, Despite having thought...

I thought that they were sisters, but they were mother and daughter.

Explanation

「と思いきや」 means 'I thought it would be A, but it turned out to be the opposite, B'. The speaker is surprised.

(I thought it would rain, but the sky cleared completely), 「怒られると思いきや、かえって褒められた」 (I thought I would be scolded, but I was praised instead).

The second part is a fact that has already happened, so it usually ends in the past (た form). It cannot express will, guesses or invitations.

Mixed up with

「と思いきや」: the expectation is broken, and reality is nearly the opposite, with surprise.

「と思ったら」: the point is 'just when ..., right away ...'; it does not always carry a reversal of expectation.

Examples

Because Utage-san is small, I thought she was a classmate, but to my surprise she was the teacher.

He has lived in Japan for ten years, so I thought he would speak fluent Japanese, but he couldn't speak it at all.

I thought that the weather would finally clear up, but it suddenly started raining.
