駅えきまで弟おとうとを迎むかえに行いきがてら、今夜こんやの夕飯ゆうはんの買かい物ものをしてくる。

I'll pick up my brother at the station and do the shopping for tonight's dinner on the way.

Explanation

「がてら」 means 'while doing the main thing, I also do another light thing on the side'.

Examples: 「散歩がてら、パンを買ってくる」 (I'll buy bread while out for a walk), 「出張がてら、現地の名所を観光する」 (I'll see local sights while on the business trip).

The first part is the main action and involves going out or moving (散歩, 買い物, ドライブ, 出張, 墓参り); the second part is the extra. Formation: noun or the verb stem.

Mixed up with

「がてら」: two things done together as one outing, the first usually a movement, as in buying bread on a walk. Fine in speech and general writing.

「ついでに」: the two actions can follow one another; the most widely usable.

「かたがた」: very formal business writing, as in 「お礼かたがたご挨拶に伺いました」 (I came to visit, both to thank you and to pay my respects).
