る動詞（否定形）

The negative of an ichidan verb: drop 「る」 and add 「ない」 (casual) or 「ません」 (polite): 「食べる」 → 「食べない」, 「食べません」.

「〜ません」 is the standard polite negative and is what formal situations and exams use. In speech, especially among younger people, 「食べないです」 and 「行かないです」 are also common and sound friendlier, but in formal situations stick to 「〜ません」.
